The Estate Sale LINE!

Wowza! That's a line!

We had a wildly successful estate sale last weekend. Thanks so much to everyone who came out and shopped! I know y’all got some great stuff. This was a killer sale.

We had a crazy line out the door and almost in TO the street when we opened Friday morning. And for those of you who may have left after waiting a bit or left because you thought it would take too long, we just wanted to let you know that we are VERY aware of the line. We do as much as we possibly can to get that line moving. It doesn’t typically take as long as you might think. So stick around. We’ll keep it moving along.

What we do to help out:

First of all, we make sure that we open the doors right on time. We get in early and the staff meets to discuss how we can keep things moving, while being helpful to the shoppers.

While people are shopping, the Amber Ostrich staff is circulating, helping folks find what they are looking for; putting loads up at the front so folks aren’t bogged down while they are shopping; and when we have a crowd, we always have at least two cashiers going to keep the inside line moving.

At our last sale, we also introduced shopping baskets.

Seriously. Shopping baskets will be at our sales!

That’s right folks. No longer do you need to worry that you won’t be able to hold it all. Now if only we could figure out a way to bring in grocery carts…

This also means we are going to become stricter about our No Bags Allowed rule.

What you can do to help:

If you get inside and have a question, quickly ask a staff member for help. That’s what I’m payin’ them for! :)

Bring bulky items up front so you don’t have to carry them around. It slows you down, therefore, slowing down the outside line.

Always ask for help! If you need assistance reaching for an item, let a staff member know. Don’t try to carry furniture that’s too heavy or take down anything you can’t reach.

Always enter through the front door. ;)

If you find something that’s not tagged, let us know. We try to make sure we price everything, but sometimes things get lost in the mix.

Here at Amber Ostrich, customer service is our number one goal. It’s what sets us apart from the crowd!

Thanks for shopping and watch for another sale in October!

Finally! Tarrytown This Weekend. UT Artwork, Vintage, MCM, 600 LP’s and MORE!

Our upcoming sale that we’ve been promoting like crazy is coming, finally!

We hope you have enjoyed all the previous tidbits.

It’s a sale worth calling in sick to work!

This is the estate of two long-time Austinites. Both were UT professors back in the 50s and 60s, and attended many of the student-faculty art auctions, acquiring most of the pieces we will have for sale this weekend. They had great taste in furniture, and they kept all their kids’ toys and books.

If you like true vintage and original artwork, then this is the sale for you!

This sale has decades old Austin/UT artwork. Not Longhorn stuff, but hippie child, abstracts, and Austin-centric artwork from some budding artists back in the 1960s.

We’ve got Ralph White, Mort Baranoff, Karl Umlauf, John Guerin, Stephen Magada, Susan and Stephanie Amster, early work by Philip Trussell, Gibbs Milliken, Diane Labowitz Rutt, Peggy Goldstein, Carolyn Manosevitz, Carola Nan Roach, and more!

Along with our UT artwork, we’ve got an original Owen Cappleman mixed media, room divider gifted to our clients in 1974. It is for sale and can become yours!

Our MCM, Austin-centric Tarrytown residents also saved their kids’ toys. And back then, this stuff was made right. These toys were built to last, now many of these items are collectible and still in great shape.

We have over 600 LP’s and 85+ 45’s. So many we dedicated a whole room just to VINYL!

Most records are in very good plus condition, and include a modest collection of Bossa Nova and Jazz.

This sale also has vintage clothing, over 150 pairs of designer shoes sizes 8 and 8.5; mid-century modern furniture, books, and some really cool ephemera, including politically minded author signed books, pamphlets, buttons and more!

Feather Your MCM Nest At Our Next Sale

This sale starts on Friday, Sept. 21 and runs through Sept. 23.

Sale hours:

Friday: 10-3; Saturday: 9-3; Sunday: 10-2.

The first actual model car from the company was a 1911 closed limousine which was followed by a 1915 Ford Model T open tourer. Our upcoming estate sale in Tarrytown is the estate of a couple of local art lovers who have lived in Austin since the late 1950’s. They are cultured folks, former UT professors. And not the least bit conservative, ahem!

I couldn’t resist highlighting some of the more risque items you’ll find at our sale. Don’t worry though, this is about as kinky as it gets. Nothing will shock you after you see these bits. ;)

The Early Bird Catches the Vintage!

I know it’s kinda harsh of me to dangle our new finds so early since our next sale isn’t until September 21, but I’m super excited about our upcoming sale.

Our next sale is a true, old-school, Austin estate sale. These folks have been in and around Austin’s art scene for decades, two former UT professors who collected student artwork during the 1950s and 60s. There are some real gems in this house! And everything, even the tidbits are amazing. There is so much and we’ve barely scratched the surface, but here are few items unearthed from this treasure of a home.

Blue Note Bakery: An AO Shopper Profile

Here at Amber Ostrich Estate Sales, we have many shoppers who are business owners and come to our estate sales to buy for their businesses.

This shopper profile is part of installation of a new blog series about our shoppers who are also business owners.

Austin Estate Sales

Angela Jiles, Confection Composer and owner of Blue Note Bakery

Angela Jiles doesn’t just bake cakes, she is an artist and a sculptor. Her art is edible. And delicious.

Jiles is the owner of Blue Note Bakery. Her business card gives her title as: Confection Composer.

Blue Note Bakery is not the kind of shop where one can drop in and buy cookies or pre-made cakes, although they are quick to offer up samples to anyone who drops in, even unannounced. All of their confections are made to order, sculpted birthday cakes and designer wedding cakes are the specialty at Blue Note.

Austin Estate Sales

Vintage hat box, used as a cake stand.

As an Amber Ostrich Estate Sales shopper, Jiles buys vintage items to go with specific orders. At our last sale in August, Jiles bought a vintage hat box and old wire basket to use as alternative cake stands for an upcoming show.

Vintage items and baking seemed to be Jiles’ fate. As an infant, one of her very first Christmas gifts was the Pillsbury dough boy doll (pictured above) and as a child, she loved to bake.

“I’ve always been into vintage,” Jiles said, noting that she had been married in a 1940s vintage wedding dress when she married her husband.

Austin Estate Sales

Angela Jiles' favorite recipe from childhood.

For Jiles, the fact that vintage weddings are popular right now is inspiring to her as a cake designer. She loves to use vintage items as inspiration for many of her cake designs, and is currently designing a line of display cakes to take to wedding shows. Other inspiration for her cakes come from fabrics and materials.

Understanding that the cake is just as important as any other part of the wedding, Jiles said she designs wedding cakes to fit perfectly in with a special day.

“I’m not just selling the cake. I’m selling the idea of your dream wedding.”

Blue Note Bakery is located on 4201 S. Congress and can be found online at http://www.bluenotebakery.com/ and also on Facebook, where they host delicious contests on a regular basis. Check them out!

Amber Ostrich on Pinterest

A few months back I joined Pinterest and started pinning. At first I couldn’t imagine how or if this site would be helpful to my business.  It was highly recommended, so I figured what the heck I will give it a go.

I have been fascinated with the interest in certain items on my Pinterest boards and thought it would be fun to share my most popular Pinterest repins.

Top of the list is this fuzzy head vintage Ken doll.

Classic Ken doll.

And more dolls. Raggedy Ann dolls are cute and remind us all of our childhood.

Vintage Raggedy Ann dolls.

Of course, it is Pinterest. Next up, most popular stuff is on my Sewist board.

Antique Lace. We've had a lot of this stuff lately. Must be in the air.

Vogue patterns never seem to go out of style y’all. We had about 100 at our last estate sale, and they were a popular item.

Chic Vogue patterns. I bet these made some awesome vintage/modern dresses.

Finally, on my Ephemera board, a classic Texas repin.

Well, we do live in Austin, Tx. Go Longhorns!

Pinterest is really fun. I am enjoying finding new ways to share items upcoming for sale and post past photos. Come check out my Pinterest boards. And feel free to shoot me an email if you want an invite so you can start your own boards.
