Here at Amber Ostrich Estate Sales, we have many shoppers who are business owners and come to our estate sales to buy for their businesses.
This shopper profile is part of installation of a new blog series about our shoppers who are also business owners.
Angela Jiles doesn’t just bake cakes, she is an artist and a sculptor. Her art is edible. And delicious.
Jiles is the owner of Blue Note Bakery. Her business card gives her title as: Confection Composer.
Blue Note Bakery is not the kind of shop where one can drop in and buy cookies or pre-made cakes, although they are quick to offer up samples to anyone who drops in, even unannounced. All of their confections are made to order, sculpted birthday cakes and designer wedding cakes are the specialty at Blue Note.
As an Amber Ostrich Estate Sales shopper, Jiles buys vintage items to go with specific orders. At our last sale in August, Jiles bought a vintage hat box and old wire basket to use as alternative cake stands for an upcoming show.
Vintage items and baking seemed to be Jiles’ fate. As an infant, one of her very first Christmas gifts was the Pillsbury dough boy doll (pictured above) and as a child, she loved to bake.
“I’ve always been into vintage,” Jiles said, noting that she had been married in a 1940s vintage wedding dress when she married her husband.
For Jiles, the fact that vintage weddings are popular right now is inspiring to her as a cake designer. She loves to use vintage items as inspiration for many of her cake designs, and is currently designing a line of display cakes to take to wedding shows. Other inspiration for her cakes come from fabrics and materials.
Understanding that the cake is just as important as any other part of the wedding, Jiles said she designs wedding cakes to fit perfectly in with a special day.
“I’m not just selling the cake. I’m selling the idea of your dream wedding.”
